Introduction

Vietnam stretches 1,650 km along the South China Sea, offering extraordinary diversity: the limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay, ancient Hoi An, the Imperial City of Hue, rice terraces of Sapa, bustling Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and the charming capital Hanoi. Main airports are Hanoi Noi Bai (HAN), Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat (SGN) and Da Nang (DAD). The Vietnam Immigration Department manages entry and e-Visa issuance.

Since August 2023, Vietnam has dramatically improved its visa policy: a 90-day eVisa is now available for citizens of all countries, and visa-free stays have been extended to 45 days for 13 countries (including UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, South Korea, Japan, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Russia). Vietnam has become one of Southeast Asia's most accessible destinations.

Tourist eVisa & Visa-Free Entry

Vietnam's 90-day eVisa is available to citizens of all countries online at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn. Choose single or multiple entry. The eVisa is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. Apply at least 3 business days before travel. The fee is USD $25 (single or multiple entry).

Citizens of 13 countries receive 45-day visa-free entry: UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Belarus, Russia, and Japan. These travelers do not need to apply in advance but can stay up to 45 days per visit (extendable once in Vietnam for a further 45 days at an immigration office).

Business eVisa

Vietnam's 90-day eVisa also covers business activities (meetings, conferences, trade). For paid employment in Vietnam, a Work Permit issued by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) is required. Vietnamese employers must apply on the worker's behalf.

Work & Long-Stay

  • Work Permit — the Vietnamese employer applies to MOLISA. Requirements: bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience), job relevant to the position, health certificate, and clean criminal record. Valid 2 years, renewable.
  • Temporary Residence Card (TRC) — issued after work permit approval; replaces the need for visa renewals for the work permit duration.
  • Investor Visa — for foreign investors establishing businesses in Vietnam; typically issued for 1–5 years.

Student Visa

International students need a Student Visa (DH) applied for at a Vietnamese embassy or via an invitation letter from the Vietnamese institution. Required: acceptance letter, proof of financial means, health insurance, and criminal background check. After arrival, register with the local police within 24 hours (usually done by your accommodation).

Transit

Passengers transiting through Vietnam airports in the international zone without clearing immigration generally do not need a visa. If you need to clear immigration for a connecting domestic flight, a transit visa or eVisa is required.

Required Documents (eVisa)

  • Valid passport (6+ months validity, 1+ blank page)
  • Passport-style digital photo
  • Scanned passport bio-data page
