Introduction
Japan is one of Asia's most captivating destinations, blending ancient temples, futuristic cities, world-class cuisine, cherry blossoms and samurai history. Main international airports are Tokyo Narita (NRT), Tokyo Haneda (HND), Osaka Kansai (KIX) and Nagoya (NGO). Japan's immigration is managed by the Immigration Services Agency (ISA).
Japan expanded its visa-free access: citizens of 68 countries and regions — including the USA, UK, Canada, most EU nations, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and many others — can visit Japan without a visa for up to 90 days (or 15 days for some nationalities). Japan has also expanded its eVisa system, allowing eligible nationals to apply online before travel.
Tourist & Short Stay
Visa-free travelers need: a valid passport, a return or onward ticket, proof of sufficient funds, and sometimes accommodation details. Japan does not require travel insurance but it is strongly recommended given Japan's high healthcare costs. Japan re-opened to individual tourism in 2022 after COVID restrictions and has seen record visitor numbers since.
Nationals not covered by visa-free agreements must apply for a Temporary Visitor Visa at a Japanese embassy or consulate, or use the eVisa system if eligible. The eVisa is applied for online and linked digitally to your passport — no sticker required.
Business Visa
Business activities such as attending meetings, negotiations, or conferences fall under the Temporary Visitor category for eligible nationalities. For paid employment, providing services, or conducting business activities in Japan, a separate Business Manager Visa or Engineer/Specialist in Humanities visa (for employed workers) is required.
Work & Long-Stay
- Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services (HISW) — the most common work visa for IT, finance, marketing, and international business professionals. Requires a university degree and a job offer from a Japanese company.
- Highly Skilled Professional Visa (HSP) — points-based visa offering accelerated permanent residency (as few as 1–3 years). For advanced degree holders with high salaries or research credentials.
- Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) Visa — for workers in 12 designated sectors (construction, food service, agriculture, etc.) facing labour shortages. Category 1: up to 5 years; Category 2: indefinite, family allowed.
- Business Manager Visa — for entrepreneurs investing ¥5 million+ and hiring at least 2 full-time employees in Japan.
- Working Holiday Visa — for citizens of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, South Korea, France, Germany and others; aged 18–30.
Student Visa
International students attending Japanese universities or language schools for more than 90 days need a Student Visa (Certificate of Eligibility). The school applies for the Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) on the student's behalf. After receiving the CoE, apply for the Student Visa at the Japanese consulate. Working part-time (up to 28 hours/week) is permitted with prior permission.
Airport Transit
Most travelers can transit through Japanese airports in the international zone without a visa if they hold a valid onward ticket. Landing permission (transit visa) is required for some nationalities. Check the current list at mofa.go.jp.
