Introduction
Cambodia is a Southeast Asian nation known for the majestic Angkor Wat temple complex (the world's largest religious monument), the colonial city of Phnom Penh, the emerald beaches of Sihanoukville and Koh Rong, and the heartbreaking history of the Khmer Rouge era. Main airports are Phnom Penh International (PNH) and Siem Reap (REP). The General Department of Immigration manages entry and visa matters.
Cambodia is one of Southeast Asia's most accessible destinations for tourists: almost all nationalities can obtain a Tourist Visa on Arrival or eVisa easily. ASEAN nationals can enter visa-free. Cambodia's eVisa system at evisa.gov.kh is simple and efficient.
Tourist Visa — eVisa & Visa on Arrival
Most nationalities can obtain a Tourist Visa (T-visa) via:
- eVisa: apply online at evisa.gov.kh at least 3 days before travel. Fee: USD $30. Valid for 30 days, single entry. Accepted at Phnom Penh, Siem Reap airports and some land border crossings.
- Visa on Arrival: available at international airports (Phnom Penh, Siem Reap) and major land border crossings. Fee: USD $30 for tourist. Bring 1 passport photo and US dollars cash. Valid for 30 days, single entry.
The tourist visa can be extended once for an additional 30 days at the General Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh (fee: USD $30). For longer stays, an Ordinary Visa (E-visa) allows extensions for business or retirement purposes.
Business / Ordinary Visa (E-visa)
The Ordinary Visa (E-visa) is for business, employment, and long-stay purposes. Available on arrival (fee: USD $35) or via the eVisa system. The E-visa must be extended within Cambodia at the Immigration Department. Long-term E-visas can be extended monthly (USD $285/month + fee for 12 months) or for 6–12 months.
Work & Long-Stay
- Ordinary Visa (E-visa) extensions — the most common long-term stay option; extended at the Immigration Department, often through a registered guesthouse or agency.
- Business Visa — for foreign investors and business owners; valid 1 year with multiple entry.
- Retirement Visa — Cambodia has no formal retirement visa but retirees typically stay on long-term E-visa extensions.
Student Visa
International students typically enter on a Tourist or Ordinary Visa and obtain an E-visa extension valid for the duration of their studies. A formal student visa does not exist as a separate category. Required: acceptance letter from a Cambodian institution.
Airport Transit
Transiting through Phnom Penh or Siem Reap airports in the international zone without clearing immigration generally does not require a visa. If clearing immigration, a tourist visa or eVisa is required.
