Healthcare and National Health Insurance

NHI is a single-payer system covering outpatient care, hospital treatment, dentistry and prescriptions, with the insured card accepted almost everywhere.

The 2026 premium rate is 5.17 per cent of insured payroll, unchanged from 2025. A self-paying insured person pays a flat NT$826/month, plus a co-payment that rises with facility level.

Private and International Health Insurance

Most arrivals need private cover for the six months before NHI eligibility, or for a whole nomad-visa stay; NHI excludes private rooms and most elective treatment.

Taiwan taxes residents on Taiwan-source income; the threshold is 183 days a calendar year. Below that, withholding applies; filing season is May, via the Ministry of Finance eTax portal.

For 2026 a single employed resident can claim NT$101,000 exemption, NT$136,000 standard deduction and NT$227,000 salary deduction — NT$464,000 before tax is due.

The Gold Card's quiet advantage: a foreign special professional resident 183+ days, earning above NT$3,000,000 a year, may exclude half the salary above that threshold for five years. You must apply and hold a Gold Card or specialist permit from the start of employment.

Housing: Renting and Buying

Renting

Leases run one year as standard; deposits are one to two months' rent, agency fees about the same.

Buying

Foreigners can own property only on reciprocity: Article 18 of the Land Act permits acquisition where the buyer's country grants ROC nationals the same right. The Interior Ministry lists reciprocal nations; otherwise a reciprocity certificate is required first. A mortgage normally needs an ARC and local income.

In Taipei, choose by MRT line rather than district name — a twelve-minute walk to a station matters more than the postcode.

Cost of Living

Taipei has a mature international school sector and a growing bilingual public offering; international schools are expensive, bilingual public schools far cheaper.

• Taipei American School and Taipei European School are the largest, offering American, British, German, French and IB tracks.

Connectivity is a clear win: fast, cheap fibre and generous mobile data.
