Overview of United Kingdom Entry Requirements 2026

The United Kingdom operates an independent immigration system following its departure from the EU. Most visitors from outside the Common Travel Area (Ireland) need either a visa or, since January 2026, an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the UK. The ETA costs GBP 10, is linked to your passport and allows multiple trips of up to 6 months over 2 years. Citizens of the EU, EEA, USA, Canada, Australia and many other nationalities are among those who can obtain an ETA instead of a full visa.

Documents Checklist for United Kingdom Visitor Visa 2026

  • Valid passport — ideally 6 months validity beyond your planned stay
  • Completed visa application form (online or paper as applicable)
  • Recent passport-size photograph (35x45mm, white background, neutral expression)
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation — hotel reservation or host invitation letter
  • Financial means evidence — bank statements, payslips, or sponsorship letter

Eligibility & Entry Conditions

Applicants must demonstrate genuine intent to visit temporarily and the ability to support themselves financially. A valid travel document, clean immigration history, and compliance with health requirements are assessed. Some nationalities may be required to provide biometric data (fingerprints and photo) at the consulate or port of entry. Always check the official United Kingdom immigration portal at gov.uk/uk-visa for the most current requirements, as policies can change with short notice.

How to Apply for a United Kingdom Visa in 2026

Most United Kingdom visa applications can be initiated online. Gather all required documents, complete the official application form, and pay the applicable fee. Some nationalities may be required to attend an in-person appointment at a consulate for biometrics. Once approved, your visa or entry authorisation will be issued electronically or stamped into your passport. Keep a printed or digital copy accessible at all times during your trip. For detailed step-by-step instructions, see our How to Apply for an eVisa guide and the Visa Documents Checklist.

Health & Character Requirements

  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): Mandatory for all visa applicants staying 6+ months. GBP 1,035 per year (GBP 776 for students and Youth Mobility). Grants access to NHS services.
  • TB test: Required for applicants from listed high-risk TB countries applying for a visa of 6+ months. Must be conducted at an approved clinic. Valid for 6 months.
  • Vaccinations: No mandatory vaccinations for entry to the UK.
  • Medical exam: Not routinely required for visa applications beyond the TB test. Applicants with known serious health conditions may need to disclose them.
  • Police clearance: Required for certain visa types — ACRO police certificate for those in the UK, home-country police certificate for overseas applicants. Required for settlement and some work visas.
  • Biometrics: Fingerprints and photo required for all visa applicants. Collected at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) or UKVCAS service point (inside UK). Reusable for subsequent applications in some cases.

Visa Extension & Renewal

  • Visitor visa: Cannot be extended beyond 6 months (except for medical treatment, academic visitors up to 12 months, or permitted paid engagements).
  • Skilled Worker: Can be extended in up to 5-year increments. Eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR/settlement) after 5 years of continuous employment.
  • Student visa: Can apply for a new CAS and extend for further study. After completion, can switch to Graduate Visa (2-3 years) or Skilled Worker Visa.
  • Spouse/Partner: Initial 2.5 years, then extend for another 2.5 years. ILR eligible after 5 years total. Relationship must be genuine and subsisting throughout.
  • Switching in-country: Most long-term visa categories allow switching from within the UK without leaving. Visitors cannot switch to most work or study routes (some exceptions).
  • Overstay consequences: Overstaying is a criminal offense. Leads to removal, re-entry ban (1-10 years), and a marker on immigration record. Voluntary departure within 30 days of overstay avoids a re-entry ban.

Visa Refusal & Appeals

  • Common refusal reasons: Insufficient funds, inadequate ties to home country, document fraud or deception, previous immigration violations, not meeting salary threshold (work visas), inadequate English proficiency, sham relationship concerns (spouse visas).
  • Administrative Review: Available for eligible decisions (Points-Based System refusals). Must be filed within 28 days (14 days if in UK). Fee: GBP 80. An independent caseworker reviews the original decision.
  • Appeal: Some refusals (e.g., human rights claims, EU Settlement Scheme) carry a right of appeal to the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber). Must be filed within 14-28 days.
  • Judicial Review: For decisions with no appeal or administrative review right, an application for Judicial Review can be made to the Upper Tribunal or High Court.
  • Reapplication: No ban on reapplying (unless deception found). New applications should address refusal reasons with strengthened evidence.
