However, Japan takes immigration rules very seriously, and tourist visa extensions are not easily granted. Simply wanting to stay longer for tourism is generally not considered sufficient grounds. If approved, the extension is usually for 15 to 90 days depending on the circumstances. Visa-exempt short-term visitors (e.g., 90 days for many nationalities) must have a strong justification. For travellers planning a longer stay in Japan, it is strongly advised to obtain the correct visa (e.g., a Cultural Activities visa or Working Holiday Visa) before arriving.

1. Assess your reason for extension

2. Find your Regional Immigration Bureau
