Introduction

Norway is a stunning Scandinavian nation known for its dramatic fjords, midnight sun, Northern Lights, Viking heritage and one of the highest standards of living in the world. Although not an EU member, Norway is part of the Schengen Area and the European Economic Area (EEA). Main airports include Oslo Gardermoen (OSL), Bergen (BGO) and Trondheim (TRD). The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (Utlendingsdirektoratet — UDI) handles all immigration matters.

Citizens of EU/EEA countries and many others (USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, etc.) visit Norway visa-free for up to 90 days. Other nationalities must apply for a Schengen C visa at the Norwegian embassy. Norway offers robust opportunities for skilled workers and students, particularly in the oil/gas and maritime sectors.

Tourist & Short Stay

Norway is one of the most expensive countries in the world. Visa-free travelers should carry: valid passport (3 months validity beyond departure), proof of substantial funds (NOK 500/day or more), return or onward ticket, accommodation proof, and Schengen-wide travel insurance (€30,000+). From 2025, ETIAS pre-registration is required for visa-exempt non-EU/EEA nationals.

Business Visa

Short business visits use the Schengen C visa. For longer assignments or employment in Norway, a Norwegian work permit is required — obtained via UDI's online portal (udi.no) before entry. The employer must offer a full-time position at agreed Norwegian wage levels.

Work & Long-Stay

  • Skilled Worker Permit — for workers with a job offer in Norway meeting wage and qualification requirements. EU/EEA nationals have the right to work freely; non-EEA nationals need a permit before entry.
  • Specialist Permit — for seconded specialists from foreign companies on short-term assignments.
  • Self-Employment Permit — for entrepreneurs establishing a Norwegian business.
  • Working Holiday Visa — for citizens of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and some other countries; aged 18–30, valid 1 year.

Student Visa

Non-EU/EEA students staying more than 90 days need a Norwegian student residence permit, applied for at udi.no before departure. Required: acceptance letter from a Norwegian educational institution (degree-level), proof of funds (NOK 128,887/year), and health insurance or access to the Norwegian health system (via registration). Norway does not charge tuition at public universities (even for non-EU students).

Airport Transit

Most travelers can transit through Norwegian airports without an ATV. Nationals of some countries need an ATV. Check the list at udi.no.
